How to Calculate Final Grade

To determine what you need on your final exam, we use the weighted average formula. Here is the math we use:

(Target - Current * (1 - Weight)) / Weight

Example

You have an 85% average. You want a 90% (A-). The final is worth 20%.

  • The 85% accounts for 80% of your grade.
  • The final accounts for the remaining 20%.
  • You would need a 110% on the final to reach a 90% average. (Better ask for extra credit!)
